Carbon crediting mechanisms
Data last updated March, 31 2023
Note: Crediting mechanisms are considered implemented if they have issued credits (or have frameworks in place to allow credits to be used domestically, such as in South Africa). Crediting mechanisms are considered to be under development if a framework is in place but the carbon credit system is not yet operational.
Due to the dynamic approach to continuously improve data quality, changes to the map do not only reflect new developments, but also corrections following new information from official government sources.
The world map excludes data from international (CDM and JI, as indicated by the UNFCCC logo) and independent (ACR, CAR, Gold Standard, VCR) crediting mechanisms. Data from these crediting mechanisms can be viewed by using the drop-down list at the bottom of this page. International crediting mechanisms are those governed by international climate treaties and are usually administered by international institutions. Independent crediting mechanisms are mechanisms not governed by any national regulation or international treaties. They are administered by private and independent third-party organizations, which are often nongovernmental organizations.
